The Backstory

We recently completed this modern bespoke kitchen for a family near Harbledown. They spent 5 years looking for a larger detached house close to Canterbury city centre with a large garden. They bought a house that was in need of a total refurbishment, which gave them the opportunity to style it exactly as they wanted it.

Our clients, having spent 3 years renovating their home, wanted a special kitchen.

“[…] which you can only get if it is made bespoke. The quality of the build and fitting are way above anything you buy off shelf and will last much longer.”

“Our home, from day one, was a renovation project. Every wire, pipe, plug, piece of carpentry has been replaced and every surface has been renewed. The kitchen was the last major part of the jigsaw.”

The Design

The kitchen design consists of a main run of base units & tall fridge freezer frame, a long island running parallel, as well as a floor to ceiling pantry larder on the far right hand side of the room. Our clients chose their cabinetry in the style of our Westminster range, omitting the shaker front panels, for a more modern and sleek look. Open shelving was considered for the main run over wall units to keep the space open and light.

“We literally had a blank sheet of paper so we put together our wish list (must have a `his ‘n’ hers` wine fridge either end of the 3m island!) and David put together a design which worked perfectly for us including putting in two floor to ceiling slot windows which make the whole space open and bright.”

The aforementioned ‘His & Hers’ wine coolers!

“We were after minimalist and no fuss but also needed to work as a family room and functioning kitchen as we are both cooks and like to entertain. The huge central island and the worktops are the main feature and two tone blue and white makes it feel very contemporary.”

The Details: Colours, Handles, Worktops & More

For their colour palette, our clients chose a slightly different take on the classic white & blue kitchen, with a brighter, more royal blue on the island and crisp white for the rest of their cabinetry.

“We wanted bright so had a special white and the contrast Observatory blue which makes it fresh and contrasts well with our Amtico oak flooring. The kitchen door hardware feels great to use and matches the door hardware around the rest of the house so an easy choice.”

Maintaining the clean, modern look, the same ‘Sparkbrook’ bars from Armac Martin were used all throughout the kitchen in a satin nickel plate finish. The worktops are a Corian product in the colour ‘

The interiors of all the cabinetry are in a gorgeous oak, featuring dovetail drawers, traditional zig zag shelving in the larder unit which also includes two painted spice racks inside! The drawers are a two drawer unit with an internal cutlery/utensil drawer inside. This makes the drawers appear as one deep, large one from the outside keeping a sleek, clean look.

On Using Herringbone

“We first met Herringbone a few years back when we were planning on changing a kitchen in our old house but we moved instead but we had already chosen Herringbone as our preferred choice for the new house which was in desperate need of a total makeover as it had not been touched in 30+ years. The team have been great from advice and planning through to fitting and final handover. Having a business able to deliver a vision and hand make in their own workshop really makes a difference. The fitters were proper carpenters and also did a first class job.

I have been in business for 30+ years and trust is a big thing as well as professionalism and skill and Herringbone has all of these. A family owned business with their own workshop and a team of skilled workers means you get an excellent outcome. We had a gut feeling they were right for us and we could not be happier. I have already recommended a number of friends which says everything.”
